Types of Chemical Reactions

Published on May 8, 2015 by

We'll learn about the five major types of chemical reactions: synthesis, decomposition, synthesis, single replacement (also called single displacement) and double replacement (also called double displacement). We'll look at examples of each, so that you can classify them, figuring out what type they are. In a synthesis reaction, a compound is made from more simple materials. In a decomposition reaction, a compound breaks down into simpler elements or compounds. In a combustion reaction, a compound (usually with carbon, hydrogen, and sometimes oxygen) combines with oxygen to give carbon dioxide and water. In a single replacement (displacement) reaction, one element that is on its own displaces another element in aqueous solution, kicking it out. In a double replacement (displacement) reaction, the positive and negative ions in two ionic compounds switch places, causing a precipitate to form.

    My chemistry teacher is for quantity over quality; meaning, she rushes through the lessons and expects us to know everything. When she is explaining things, she is just babbling words to herself it seems. She doesn’t understand that we are amateurs on the subject, so she acts like she’s talking to herself almost. Anyone here understand me? Anyway, you helped me sir. Thank you.

    Synthesis: Putting Together
    Decomposition: Breaking Up
    Single Replacement: “I’m leaving you for your friend”
    Double Replacement: “Wife Swap”
    Combustion: “Taylor Swift”

    All Credits to my science teacher

    The Taylor Swift one: does the same thing over and over again. Gets a boy. They break up. She writes a song.

    Hope this helps!

    Isn’t H2O a liquid?

    • ChemSimplified 2 years ago

      Depends. It can exist as a gas or solid, depending on the temperature. At room temperature, obviously, it will be liquid. However, in the example that’s given at 3:55, H2O was produced at higher temperature, therefore, appearing as a gas.

  • Emma Swirl 2 years ago

    Wait in a combustion reaction when it makes carbon dioxide and water, are the carbon dioxide and water separate or together?

    • ChemSimplified 2 years ago

      The two products, CO2 and H2O are separate.

  • Emma Swirl 2 years ago

    Wait at 8:20 for the product, why is the NO3 in parenthesis but it’s not in the reactant part?

    • ChemSimplified 2 years ago

      Because in AgNO3, it’s formed from Ag+ and NO3-, so you just need one of each ion to form an ionic compound, AgNO3.

      For Cu(NO3)2, it’s formed from Cu2+ and NO3-. In order to form an ionic compound, the charges must balance, that means we need 2 groups of NO3- to balance off 1 Cu2+. That’s why the NO3 is in parenthesis, with a 2 outside.

  • Emma Swirl 2 years ago

    wait why do reactants create more than one product? are those products separate from each other or together?

    • ChemSimplified 2 years ago

      The products form depend on reactivity of the reactants. They are separate from each other.

  • Michelle Poloney 2 years ago

    now that I got the double replacement in their respective places do I now proceed to balance them out and if so can you please explain or do you have a video for that?

    Shouldn’t the general formula for Double-replacement reactions be:

    AB + CD -> AD + CB

    As opposed to

    AB + CD -> AD + BC

    Because the C is a cation and it should be in the beginning of the compound?
