# Solving Systems of Equations… Substitution Method (NancyPi)

Published on May 16, 2018 by

MIT grad shows how to use the substitution method to solve a system of linear equations (aka. simultaneous equations). To skip ahead: 1) For a BASIC SUBSTITUTION example, skip to time 0:19. 2) For an example where it's TRICKIER to solve and also involves FRACTIONS, skip to 08:17. and P.S.) For WEIRDER-LOOKING DIFFERENT FORMS of systems, for which you can still use substitution, skip to 16:46. Nancy formerly of MathBFF explains the steps.

For how to solve a system of linear equations with the ELIMINATION METHOD, jump to: https://youtu.be/XOJgzW4P7T8

What does it mean to solve a system of equations using the SUBSTITUTION METHOD? It means to solve for the x and y values that make both equations true, using the substitution method. Substitution is just one way of solving (elimination is another way). Here are the THREE STEPS you can always follow:

STEP 1) First, solve for x or y in either of the two equations in the system (get x or y alone on one side). It doesn't matter which equation you use first, and it doesn't matter whether you get x alone first or y alone first. You can pick whatever looks easiest to solve for in the system.

STEP 2) Then, take the expression you found for y (or x) and plug it into the other equation you haven't used yet. For instance, if you got y alone in the first step, take that expression for y and plug it into, or substitute it into, the variable y in the other original equation in the system. Then, simplify the expression by distributing to open up the parentheses (using the distributive property) and combining like terms. Solve for the unknown variable in this equation.

STEP 3) Finally, once you solve and get an actual number for a variable, you can take that number and plug it back into either original equation in the system and then simplify and solve for the other variable. This (x,y) pair is your solution.

IMPORTANT: If you get something like 0 = 0 or 8 = 8, or something like 1 = 2 or 0 = 21 when you are following these steps and trying to solve, then you've probably found a special case. If you get something TRUE like 0 = 0 (a number equals the same number), then there are an infinite number of solutions to the system, and you can just write "infinitely-many solutions". If instead you get something FALSE like 0 = 21, then there is no solution (inconsistent system), and you can write "no solution".

• Nice way to explain
Thanks

• Hey Nancy please make video on matrices and determinants

• Matresses and Detergents

• @Gabriel Paulo Nginhena Gabita hahhahaha lol

• Coming out with all these videos before my finals bless you

• Are u in college doing this? Or highschool

• @Krystian Murdzek same

• i would just do linear algebra and matlab lol

• NANCY, we need integrals plz

• 1080p πŸ‘ŒπŸ‘ŒπŸ‘Œ

• I love how u lay things out!

• great to see you back teaching Nancy, loving your explanations , great tutor

• how can you do

x times y ?

in the 3rd one last example……

• You make the equations easy to solve. Well spoken, clearly defined problems and solutions. My ERAU instructor linked us to this video, very pleased. Thank you!

• Which number did she not write in the video?

• On the second problem I paused it to try to practice elimination (reviewing lol). I multiplied the bottom equation by 2, cancelling out the x and y giving me 0=0 (instead of -8=-8.. i think if you simplified that it’s still 0=0, right?) Still infinitely many solutions, but is that still a correct way? Man I’ve been overthinking a lot if so lol thank you again!

• I did without simplifying by 2 and found 8 = 8. I do not know what this means. Nor did I continue the resolution.

• Jugginator 12, yes, the two equations are the same line.

• Ronald Jensen Thank you!

• You’re the best nancy

• Nancy, thank you very much. Good video. ☺

• Your video helped me a lot. Thank you so much!

• Milay Anime Do i know u ?

• I’m doing this in 7th grade

• this video was very helpful

• Omg. U fRICKKING SAVED MY LIFE U TEACH SO MUCH BETTER THAN MY TEACHER OMG GOD BLESSED U IM FINALLY NOT STRESSED ANYMORE

• thank you so much your so helpful better than my teacher

• I wish you were my teacher

• Can u just be my teacher please πŸ’€

• Love the video you make everything make sense @Nancy pi

• you are the best teacher in the world….I understood the concept so well now..thanku

• This is helpful Nancy thank you

• How does she write backwards what a legend.

• thank you so much for helping me, you are more helpful than my real teacher.

• This made so much sense! My math teacher never showed us how to do these types of problems and he teaches too fast. Thankyou!β€οΈπŸ’•πŸ™

• YOU HAVE EARNED A SUBSCRIVER

• This is confusing but easy at the same time ??

• Watched this to complete my math assignment. Thank you for helping!

• You explain this better than my teacher. Thank you!!!

• I understood nothing because you were speaking and not showing examplesπŸ‘Ž

• Dislike button works

• The fuck? The whole video is her showing examples

• Ur So hot❀️

• I wish you were my teacher in school. Thank you so muchπŸ™You helped me more than you know.

• Hi Nancy
2/3x + y = 14/3
4/5x – 3/4y = -10
Thank you

• y = -92/5 x = 77/2

• OH MY GOD THANK YOU SO MUCH BEEN STUCK FOR SUCH A LONG TIME!!!!

• 9:41 wait wouldnt you add the 2y to the 4 insted of tagging it at the end? can someone explain lol i have a quiz tommorow

• i guess i’m a bit late :), but 2y and 4 and are not like terms. this means they can’t be added together. this is because (y) could be anything and adding 2y and 4 could be 504 or it could be -7. this is why you have to put it in its simplest form; 2y+4. i hope this helped and you did well on your quiz

• Thank you so much! I understood your video, unlike my math class at times! πŸ™‚

• Thank youuuuu so muchh for your helpful vid……. lately Im struggling solving these thingss…. but now its really easy for mee….. thanks againβ™₯️

• Thanks a ton teacher!!!

• do a problem with 4 variables plz!

• you did one step wrong

• I love u mam

• Hi Nancy, please make a video of Maclaurin’s series and Taylor’s series

• You are a legend. I can’t count the number of times I didn’t fail tests last year because of your videos.

• I remember linear algebra. That was some really bizarre but cool mathematics.
Have you ever set up a system of equations and then converted the matrix into echelon form obtaining the answers on the right side of the equals sign? I got fast at that once, but I think I’m a little out of practice. Once, I also wrote a very cool computer programming routine that worked like a charm in most situations. Imagine a program where all you have to do is put in the known variables, and it automatically solves for the unknowns. This is a science all of its own!

• Ψ΄Ψ±Ψ روحة Ψ΄ΩƒΨ±Ψ§Ψ§Ψ§Ψ§be love Nancy omyma form lraq😍😍😘

• Nancy really needs to name the “tops” and the “bottoms” for what they actually are as numerator and denominator. We should not give in to the dumbing down of students. They need to learn the terms.

• Ok boomer

• Thank You!!!

• you are as beautiful as your brain lvuuuu

• Do this. 2x+4y=-9
4x+7y=-3

• This video gave a better understanding just like how my teacher taught you.

• can you be my math teacher??

• my thoughts exactly

• Thank you !!πŸ’›

I didn’t really understand what my teacher was saying in class and this video helped me understand.

• I’m in love with her 😍😍😍😍

• ….work

• Work

• Hi Nancy, i am a freshman, and i missed school yesterday when my algebra 1 teacher taught this. Is there any way that i can take some tutoring lessons with you? If so how can we communicate?

• I love you Nancy from kenya cz u help us to succeed in our future

• so simple

• You are so cute and smart.

• It should be y= -2x+11

• Are you going to follow pemdas?

• I still dont understand I hate math bro

• Oh yeah yeah

• This really helps for periodical test

• very nice figer teacher

• Omg you so good on this i wish you can be my tutor

• You have, in a single video, shared your knowledge, clearly and with great patience, for the betterment of my incredibly frustrated and challenged mind! I am forever grateful for your talent and thoughtfulness; please keep making videos ( algebra specifically). I β€œget-it” now, thank you!

• You do not sound like you know it

• Thank you. I really appreciate your help

• Thank you Nancy, my professor went over so fast in class so I didn’t get it but your explanation is really helpful!

• This is much useful for me thankyou sister.

• can you have a fraction for an answer??????????????

• very professional, you made math actually be relaxing, thats a miracle

• Great explaination

• This is so unclear. You lost me at 6:36 πŸ™„

• Thank you. I use photomath though

• like this comment

• You so fucking pretty 😩

• please be my Math teacher

• ahhh thank you

• Thank you this helped so much!!

• can i ask something ; i know im dumb at math but.
im on the middle of my math solving and then
* -37x = 0 *
i had almost got the x , but then i dont know if it will be like this
* -37x Γ·37 = 0Γ·37 *
i know im dumb πŸ™

• I was going to recommend this video to my class, because your explanations are so organized and clear… But then you got to the comment about the system with infinitely many solutions, where you say that -8=-8 regardless of whatever values x and y take, so any pair (x,y) is a solution. πŸ™ Not every pair would solve the system. Only those that are on the line.

I am looking for a video where students can learn that “infinitely many solutions” is not the final answer. Instead, they need to present the solutions as a dependent pair. In your example, the answer to the question of “solving the system” would be that there are infinitely many solutions, and they are of the form (4/3+2/3y,y), or (x,3/2x-4)

I would love it if you switched this video for one like that, because I have a feeling you would do a great job explaining it.

• Thanks for the video, it really helped me so much. Keep up the excellent work girl πŸ’ͺ

• At the beginning of the the video what if the 2 was a negative? Would you add or subtract?

• Thanks for this video πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ

• Nancy, you made a mistake solving the second equation. X is 2Y, and Y is 1. So there is no infinite solutions, there’s only ONE.

• Does she write backwards cause if so wow lol

• Thanks a lot ma’am!!!!πŸ’πŸ’πŸ’

• She is so sexy

• Nancy, you rock. Thanks for doing this!! BIG help

• Are you using a mirror or writing backwards on glass?? Thanks so much!!!

• Both. She is writing normally on glass (right handed) and the recording is then mirrored.

• will you marry me ?

• screw these numbers whats your number

• zecoya lmaoaooa

• just dont this is not a dating website you freakin pervert

• Stop she is just trying to teach tf.

• I love you continue teaching us how to solve the problem of equation you teach us with much love

• thanks for helping me be prepared for my test

πŸ™‚

• How did it go?

• i subed and liked the vid okay

• I have a math test coming up this Tuesday and this video was really helpful. I am leaving a like…

• The elimination better would’ve been better/faster

• Ibrahim Najm u can’t always use elimination on substitution questions dumbass

• up till 3 and i finally found a video i can understand

• wish i had teachers like this

• This helped so much thank you!!

• She sounds so nervous and doesn’t sound as confidence in her voice but u did help me understand thank you so much

• You are explaning very nicelyπŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ» …..Making hard thing very easy for me…..And you are very gorgeous and beautiful…😘😎

• so pretty…

• je moeder

• Thank you

• Im sitting in a small room doing a packet of this, im super bored

• A good teacher you are

• Thank u so much

• This is literally the one thing that i literally cannot do!! And you helped so much you explain everything very intricately and you make it simple. Thank you so much i fr had to do this hw over 6 times

• Finnaly I simple way to do I found videos that legit took 20 minutes to answer 1 problem

• no wait but,i used -6x + 4y=-8 then i got y=2
but then u used “3x-2y=4 and then urs was infinitely many solutions” how come?

• What a beautiful maths teacher.

• Thanks πŸ’•

• so we should have just enough fuel for a final burn. Right?

• NancyPi thank you very much for helping me in Maths and also you are beautiful and lastly the words It’s ok if you don’t like maths but like my video (nice joke) you pulled in the last was just marvellous.πŸ‘

• Go on sis, solve those equations.

• I’m so dumb, I watched this video and I’m still so confused, I’ll just not do my homework

• @Ya Boii Baked Potatos use Khan Academy if you don’t understand, GL

• T H I C C

• Thanks this video helped me a lot.

• Hard Work Bet,s effort

• i have an exam tmm and this helped me alot thank you

• Great, dear Nancy

• πŸ™πŸ½ thank youuu

• Mam i really liked it I’m from india

• Hi Nancy! I found that this works a little easier and w/o dealing with fractions. multiply the bottom equation by 2 and u will see it works out very nicely. I always take the easiest term that will cancel out the top/bottom term to eliminate x/y. In this case u got the best of both. 😊

• Love this channel, thank you so much

• aye

• You married?!?

• Smh I can’t. Whats wrong with boys bruh????

• Ok math is cool but ur so pretty and I can’t focusπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ’•

• iron flab imagine assuming their genders

• harper 1215 oh no not this

• iron flab πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

• @Tony Rizzo I’m not sure if you are trolling but if you aren’t, would you say the same thing if they said this about a guy. Im just asking because there is a rising double standard.

• Awesome gorgeous girl

• I just clicked because on my phone the title of the video ended at meth 🀣🀣🀣

• You are Gorgeous and very Beautiful πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜˜πŸ˜‹πŸ˜πŸ˜˜

• Let’s all ask her to dance for us

• @Blast wth ?? eww nahh

• Your some weird Pakistani creepy man.

• Ah This explains it much better

• Thank you so much for this😁 it really helped! I got the same answer as when I used the method eliminationπŸ’œπŸ’œ

• I just subscribed πŸ™‚

• ΰ€•ΰ€Ύΰ€Ήΰ₯€ ΰ€ͺΰ€£ ΰ€Άΰ€Ώΰ€•ΰ€΅ΰ€€ ΰ€†ΰ€Ήΰ₯‡ ΰ€Άΰ€Ώΰ€• ΰ€—ΰ€£ΰ€Ώΰ€€ ΰ€œΰ€°ΰ€Ύ ΰ€ͺΰ€Ύΰ€—ΰ€²

• This was so helpful thanks ❀️

• You are the truth for being able to write backwards πŸ˜‚. Thanks this helped a lot though

• β€œIf you’re thinking of trolling my videoπŸ˜‚β€

• Thanks For ..

• Thanks for learning to the equations

• gall am subscribing u made a mathematicisn I literally just understood wow yayyyyyy wohooo tysmmm

• Thanx a mill, you made it so simple and easy to understand!!

• I m indian

• Hello baby i luv u

• pervs πŸ™„

• You deserve 1 million subs

• how do u write backwards omg it so hard

• plz learn to speak hindi untill i cant understand something

• Then watch a Hindi video she isn’t going to waste HER time learning something for a stranger.

• Never gonna need this shit after school smh

• Finally, you are an angel sent from above by the math gods. Thank you very much..

• I m the student here… I never saw any teacher being nervous in front of listeners …. Good teaching ma’am

• For the 6x + 4y one, I got x=0 and y=-2. It works too! I’m very confused.

• In the second equation, she got x in terms of y. Then, when you take that expression (from the second equation) and plug it in for x (in the first equation), you wind up getting a true statement (anything=itself), after working out all of the arithmetic. When that occurs, there are infinitely many solutions to that equation.

• When i did part 2 by my self following the steps i was like what heck am i doing something wrong after trying it a few times i was like wow i am really messing up something so simple then i gave up and watched the rest of the video and a turns out its a special case that say/ means they can be infinitely many solutions or no solutions i honestly just learn that this could happen so glad i watch this video

• You saved my life!!!😁πŸ˜

• thank you so much, this video helped me a lot but what is there were eqn. that stared with 1/2(m-3n)=1
3(m+4n)=-12

i have no idea what i should be doing after i get y=mx+b

• This helped me a lot thanks

• Beauty and brain in one place. A rare sight indeed. Thanks Nancy

• haha i laughed

• Perfect sentence😊

• “That’s just not true, it’s nonsense- it’s not true”: best definition of a no solution answer. πŸ˜€

• I’m taking a math class that I should have taken in high school and this was very helpful. Thank You. Also, my ADHD could not help but focus on the fact that you are a fellow lefty and you have to write backwards. Great quality video! Subscribed!

• I cant focus because idek how she is writing backwordsπŸ˜“

• Who ever thought of simultaneous equations is gay

• Boys summer break is almost coming just waiting to pass for my finals

• Thanks for this. You only realise how much of this stuff you’ve forgotten when you need to use it.

• i wish she was my teacher.. dang look at her….

• Whats that even supposed to mean….?

• who else is confused

• im always confused on the standard form to slope form. isn’t it y=-2x+11? Someone please clarify

• hey, thank you so much. The video was great, i could solve the equations but cannot solve the questions based on word problems. The equation that i create is absolutely absurd and never correct. Could you please make more videos on how to solve word problems on simple equations, ages, reverse number and stuff .

• I love you Nancy

• Nice voice πŸ‘Œ useful easy to me!…….πŸŒΉπŸŒΉπŸŒΉπŸπŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ€©

• I have a test on this tomorrow and I have NO IDEA what I’m doing

• this tutorial doesn’t help me because you are so beautiful that its disturbing me i cant focus

• I think you should stop being a creep…

• I knew all my confusion would be gone after watching this video, and I wasn’t wrong. Thanks for helping again☺️been watching those videos for almost four years now, saved my ass countless times

• I can’t understanda mam please sum easy method you sa

• X=2 and y=7 correct answer

• Hi
The video is cool, but please if u can solve ( 2x + 5y = 33 & ( x + 3y = 19 ) using substitution method that will be great. Thanks

• Williams Josh ez bro

• This is better then khan academy

• Thank you so much teacher!

• Lovely smile

• Daymn I wish I had a hot teacher like her

• thank you soooooo much you really helped me to pass math β™₯β™₯β™₯

• How you write from your left hand

• How long and tedious this is is really confusing me. I have 2x+7y=222 and 2x+136=6y and I can’t find anything videos that are set up to help me with an problem like that. My jackass of a math teacher gave us homework the night before a final. He’s a piece of shit.

• Ur an angel

• Thanks

• Life saver

• For some impressive reason, women most often seem to teach so much better than men. So many male teachers offer the easy examples. You instead chose to show the more challenging ones with fractions as well, offering a way to see the fractions’ solution when it is not obvious (as in whole number / one). You offer students a way to solve these with assurances that they too can get math done. Had I had your teaching when I was young, I might’ve even fancied myself as a modern-day Euclid. Well done, thank you.

• Very nice videos

• All of ur video is very helping me in my math. Last month, I got 86% for my mark. Thanks

• im so distracted by the fact that she writes backwards, or at least it looks like she is :0

• Gosh you explain things well–thank-you!

• If you were my math teacher n high school, I would be a physicist today!

• my god i can’t concentrate you’re really beautiful😍πŸ˜

• weirdo

• @Angela Mosby hahaha

• Thank you so much! You are a natural teacher! Your video helped me prepare for my test!

• I love you

• easy method thanks a lot

• oh babeeee

• After watching this video 10 times now I got it

Maybe…

• Mode of instruction made it much easier to understand. Thank you!

• I love you

• Thanks a million this was extremely helpful

• shes not writing backwards and shes not left handed, they flipped the video

• great explanation and a beautiful accent.

• I saw this video as was scrolling through the internet for systems of equations, why because I was failing my 7 grade algebra class I saw the video a good 3 times and I turned into a calculator. thank you so much. (T_*) thank you

• any videos on gaussian elimination

• did you know if you type awesome while watching a video the red bar at the bottom changes colors

• Confused

• Thank god, finally a pretty math teacher and the name Nancy pi perfect. God bless you Nancy.

• Her voice us calm

• Question: is it normal for a variable to be equal to a decimal? e.g. x=1.9 ?

• i like your math videos from Kenya

• HOW ARE YOU WRITING IN THIN AIR!!!!!

• your a goat thank u very much

• My college professors suck i dont recomend college use youtube and google thanks nancy

• Everyone here left handed (including me) hit the like button
πŸ‘‡

• But 2x minus 2 is zero not -2

• writing backwards is haaaaaaard

• damn she is lefty and is writting backwards!!!

• lmao it’s flipped. she’s not writing backwards

• with all regards,
i did the last one and have a little confusion on the signs Q) Y=-X+1
Y (place) Y=X-7
-X+1= X-7 (1 go’s to right hand side 7+1=8)
-X=X-8
-2X=-8 -8/2
(simplifying) -8/2=4 now here i am little stuck with signs its negative 8 over positive 2 now will i be getting -4 in results or +4
X=4 or X=-4
(Y=X-7 in place) (Y=X-7 in place)
Y= 4-7 = -3 OR Y=-4-7 =-11
PLEASE ANYONE WHO knows HOw To DO THIs help me

• Omg thank you girl😭 I needed this!! Thank you a million times you’re a legend!!

• my momsphone next upload what do you mean?πŸ˜‚

• why are you so damn hot

• Reading backwards, writing backwards and writing lefty. Wow. Couldn’t do that in a million years.

• Thanks Nancy! you rock!

• Where were you when I was taking HS Algebra? You have a pleasant demeanor and your students should be grateful.

• you seem like ur being held at gunpoint, are u ok?

• Thank you for all the help

• Elimination would not have worked either for the last case because of signs of positive and negative not allowing for clean multiplication

• Damn, that was hard to just watch but I think I got it. Thanks so much for making these vids you might of just help me pass my finals will keep you updated if I pass ^ ^

• Did you pasd

• wait in 3:30 i don’t know why you subtracted the minus two x from the eleven, i thought that you could only take it away from the x
any help will be much appreciated
XD

• its pretty simple
the first eqn is 2x + y = 11 and you want to isolate for y
so you’d subtract 2x from both sides so it would be,
2x – 2x + y = 11 – 2x
y = 11 – 2x (2x-2x = 0 so it would 0 + y which is simply y)
