Estimation

To estimate an equation means to approximate the value of each number in the equation and adding up (or subtracting, multiplying, etc) the approximated values.

The result is the ESTIMATED VALUE of the entire equation.

Note Carefully:

ESTIMATED VALUE does NOT equal ACTUAL VALUE

Example:

Let’s find the estimated value of the following equation:

99 + 105 + 48 + 396 = ?

99 rounded off is 100

105 rounded off is 100

48 rounded off is 50

396 rounded off is 400

So our approximated equation should look like this:

100 + 100 + 50 + 400 = 650

Therefore, the estimated value of 99 + 105 + 48 + 396 is equal to 650.

(NOT the actual value!)
